The NJCAA released the first Division 3 Men's Basketball poll of the New Year. The St. Cloud Technical and Community College team is ranked at #2. This is the fourth poll of the season, and the Cyclones have played well enough to be ranked nationally in each one (7th-3rd-5th-2nd).
This marks only the second season in which the SCTCC men's team has been a full member of the NJCAA. Currently the team has a record of 13-1, and will finish up the season playing all MCAC southern division competition. All home games are played at the Whitney Recreation Center, directly across the street from the main building on campus. Check for a home schedule on our website. Come out and support your Cyclones!

Cyclones Begin New Year With A Pair Of Wins
The SCTCC men's basketball team came back from winter break to play a road game in Hibbing, MN vs the Hibbing Community College Cardinals. This was the second meeting of the season between the two teams, as the Cyclones defeated the Cardinals 85-73 in the first game. This time around it was much of the same for SCTCC as the team pulled out a 90-77 victory.
SCTCC built up a lead as large as 14 in the first half, and finished the half leading 41-30. In the second, the Cardinals fought their way back into the game, and cut the lead to 74-72 with 3:12 left in the game. From that point, Jared Noonan hit a running lay-up, Scott Nystrom connected on a 3 and finished a three point play in consecutive possessions. The Cyclones would close the game on a 16-5 run to finish the game. Noonan led all scorers with 25 points, hitting a season high 5 three pointers. Felipe Villalaz (Sauk Rapids, MN) led the team in rebounding with 14. SCTCC had an advantage off the bench as well in scoring, with the Cyclone reserves outscoring the Cardinals 24-13. This also marked the first game of the year for freshman Michael Wiese (Albertville, MN) and the return of sophomore Nate Vang (Eyota, MN). Both players had great contributions to the team with Wiese providing 15 points and 4 rebounds, and Vang with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

On Tuesday, the Cyclones took part in their first MCAC southern division game of the season. The Ridgewater College Warriors traveled to St. Cloud. The game was close early on, with the two teams exchanging baskets the game was tied 4 times in the first half. The Cyclones were able to create some separation as the half wore on, and it resulted in a 44-33 advantage. The second half brought on more balanced scoring for the Cyclones as 4 reached double figures (Noonan 14, Bailey 13, Wiese 11, Nystrom 10). Sophomore Riley West came close to a double-double with 8 points and 8 assists on the night. The balanced attack resulted in a convincing 84-70 final score. All Cyclones that played in the game scored.

SCTCC Ranked Seventh Nationally
Coming off of back-to-back wins prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, where the Cyclones defeated St Johns University JV 78-71 and Itasca Community College 88-62, SCTCC will head into this week with three home games. Tonight the Cyclones play host to St Johns University JV team again with a 7pm tip-off at the Whitney Recreation Center in St. Cloud. Friday brings Hibbing Community College into town for an 8pm tip, and the week concludes on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm versus Rainy River Community College.

Cyclones Complete Weekend Sweep With Win Over Mayville
The SCTCC men's basketball team has had a busy week of game action. Sunday's game against the Mayville State University Comets marked the 3rd game in 5 days for the Cyclones. So far this young season the team has met each challenge, and on this afternoon the result again ended in SCTCC's favor with a 85-78 win.
Both teams were coming off of a game the previous day, so fatigue was a factor going in. However the Cyclones used their depth to wear down the Comets throughout the game. Mayville played very hard throughout, but SCTCC kept the pressure on and withstood some hot shooting from the opponent. The Comets were able to hit 12 three pointers in all, including 4 from back-up guard Josh DeWitt.
Four Cyclones were able to find double figures in the scoring column. SCTCC was led by sophomore Riley West (Lakeville, MN) with a season high 28 points, followed by Jared Noonan (Richfield, MN) with 15, Felipe Villalaz (Sauk Rapids, MN) 12, and Lucas Rynda (New Prague, MN) with 10. A trio of Cyclones helped the home team control the glass; Noonan, Villalaz, and Rynda all hauled in 6 rebounds a piece allowing the team to a 44-32 advantage.

Cyclone Men Up-End Central Lakes
Saturday afternoon the SCTCC men's basketball welcomed in the Central Lakes College Raiders into the Whitney Recreation Center. Coming into the game, the Cyclones had never beaten the Raiders in a men's basketball matchup. This time around, SCTCC was able to come out victorious with a 72-58 win.
In the opening minutes both team matched baskets, and played aggressive defense. Good possessions were hard to come by, and the Cyclone's found themselves at the free throw line 21 times. After struggling from the line in previous outings, SCTCC was able to hit at a consistent rate versus CLC, shooting 71% in the half. The home team ended the half shooting 31% from the floor (8/26 FG), but remained in front due to a great defensive effort.
The second half was more of the same, as the teams traded baskets in the early going. Midway through the second half, the Cyclones were able to gain some separation with a 9-0 run. SCTCC continued to attack the Raiders, and made their way to the free throw line throughout the second half. CLC still had fight in them late in the half, but the Cyclones were able to close the game out at the line. In all, the home team shot a total of 38 free throws (27/38). That turned out to be the difference in the scoring column with the Raiders reaching the line 24 times, and hitting 14 of those.
Jared Noonan (Richfiled, MN) led the Cyclones in the scoring department with 19 points. Scott Nystrom (St. Cloud, MN) bounced back with 15 points (7/7 FTs) and Riley West (Lakeville, MN) added 11 points. Cyclones Rally Late For Win
The SCTCC men's basketball team struggled for most of Wednesday night's game at Itasca Community College in Grand Rapids, MN. The first road test for the Cyclone's was a little overwhelming at times, and found the green and gold down as much as 19 points in the first half, and by 20 in the second half. The team showed some toughness and determination throughout the remainder of the game, and found a way to win.
The Cyclone's could not seem to find their shooting stroke from near or far early on. The team struggled from beyond the 3 point line (0/10) and from the free throw line (5/13) in the first 20 minutes, shooting 36% from the field. Meanwhile, the home Vikings had it working, shooting 49% as a team. ICC was lead by Quenton Housely with 16 points in the first half. A late steal and score from freshman Ashton Bailey (Chicago, IL) gave the Cyclone's a little momentum heading into the locker room, SCTCC remained down 51-35.
After the break, it was a game of runs by both teams. The Cyclone's cut the lead to single digits on two occasions early in the second half, only to see ICC stretch the lead back out. The lead was 72-52 with just over 10 minutes remaining. SCTCC was still down 80-67 with just under 5 minutes on the game clock, and continued to play hard on both ends of the floor. The Vikings saw their last points of the game with 3:36 left, at which point they had an 11 point advantage. It was all Cyclone's to close out the game, as they finished on a 12-0 run capped off by sophomore Jared Noonan (Richfield, MN) floater in the paint with 2.2 seconds on the clock to put SCTCC up 83-82. A last second attempt by ICC went awry, as the Cyclone's completed the comeback.

Cyclone Men Move To 2-0 With Win Over Bismarck State
On Saturday afternoon, the SCTCC men's basketball team was matched up against Bismarck State College, a NJCAA Division I team. Coming off of Wednesday's win versus Oak Hills, the Cyclones were looking to continue their balanced scoring attack. Bismarck State came into the game with a 1-1 record. The game proved to be a great match-up, and in the end the home team came away with the 90-79 victory.
The first half saw the Cyclones jump out to an early 18-8 lead, as the Mystics struggled to find their shooting stroke. Bismarck State battled back on the hot shooting of Tanner Purintun, and eventually took a 35-33 lead into the half. SCTCC shot 31% from the floor in the first half, including a 4/13 performance from behind the arc. BSC shot 41% from the floor, but struggled from the 3 point line at 0/10 in the half.
The Cyclones regrouped at the half, and got into a rhythm offensively in the second stanza. The home team brought great effort on the defensive end, which lead to great opportunities on the offensive end. SCTCC shot a blistering 67% from the field in the half, and 50% from the 3 point line. Sophomore guard Riley West (Lakeville, MN) led the Cyclones in scoring and assists with 22 points and 7assists. Scott Nystrom (St. Cloud, MN) followed with 15 points, and Zach Jiskra (Sartell, MN) added 12. Freshman forwards Lucas Rynda (New Prague, MN) and Felipe Villalaz (Sauk Rapids, MN) paced the Cyclones on the boards with 12 and 10 respectively.
